Our Story

image-ourstoryheader

Open all year, Vineland Estates Winery is not only the home of fine wine and cuisine, but an unmatched touring facility and wine country destination. At this picturesque venue, extensive vineyards on the bench of the Niagara Escarpment provide the stunning backdrop to a unique cluster of carefully restored historic buildings.

Our landmark stone tower stands proudly over a former Mennonite homestead with structures that date back to the 1840s. These include the former farmhouse, now The Restaurant with its panoramic views of the vineyards; the century barn that houses our retail store and wine tasting bar under soaring wood beams; and the charming stone Carriage House, with its intimate surroundings for private events.

For over thirty years, Vineland Estates Winery has continually elevated the wine and culinary experience in Niagara. Here, the essence of the Niagara escarpment can be both seen – in the unforgettable landscape of undulating vineyards looking over Lake Ontario – and tasted, in the wines that are a reflection of this unique growing area.

The result is a legacy of great Riesling, exceptional dining, and memorable wine adventure. History continues to be made at this landmark wine country property, and we invite you to join us as the tradition of award winning wines, unparalleled hospitality and the finest local cuisine continues.

Our Restaurant

image-ourstoryrest

As one of Niagara’s first winery restaurants and a forerunner of Niagara’s flourishing wine and culinary scene, we offer cuisine featuring ingredients from local purveyors prepared by an internationally trained team of chefs led by Executive Chef Justin Downes.

Guests dine indoors in the renovated 1845 farmhouse or outdoors under the new shade sails. Wherever you are seated, you will take in the views of rolling vineyards, the forests of the Niagara Escarpment and Lake Ontario and Toronto in the distance.

The Restaurant is open for Lunch and Dinner.

Our Wineshop

Built in 1877, this century barn was once used for farm equipment and storage. In 1999 the barn was fully restored to its classic beauty and is now the winery retail shop.

The wineshop and tasting bar are housed under soaring wood beams were you can:
• Enjoy wine tastings conducted using Spiegelau stemware,
• Shop for current and older vintages including wines that are exclusively available here,
• Peruse a full compliment of Spiegelau products and wine accessories,
• Purchase many gourmet food products, Canadian cheese and cured meats in The Market Upstairs – located in the Wineshop.

Our Barrel Cellar

Our underground barrel cellar showcases our history, but also allows us to enhance the winemaking process with an eye to the future.
The cellar is home to our library, a living record of our thirty year history. This library houses vintages that date back to our first, in 1983.
Completed in the summer of 2006, the underground barrel cellar allows for more control and for a larger volume of our wines to undergo the oak aging process.

Our Vineyards

image-ourstoryvineyard

The location of our two most significant vineyards (St. Urban and Bo-Teek) are in the designated viticultural area of the Niagara Escarpment (Twenty Mile Bench sub appellation) and is the essence of the identity of our wines. The much-heralded growing area of the Twenty Mile Bench of the Niagara Escarpment boasts the unique, convection-warming effect from Lake Ontario. The Bench also allows for natural drainage (both water and air), producing complexity and the “Bench signature” concentration of citrus fruit and acidity.

The centrepiece of our Escarpment plantings is the 42 acre St. Urban Vineyard (our “home farm”), that surrounds our winery buildings. This vineyard showcases the Weis 21 Riesling clone, brought to Canada by the winery’s founder, Hermann Weis. The first plantings went in the soil in 1979 and were followed successively in 1980 and 1981. Hailing from the Mosel in Germany, Weis was an experienced grape grower who knew exactly what would grow successfully in the Niagara Region.

Beyond our two escarpment vineyards, the latest addition was the nearby 16 acre Greenlane Vineyard. Although it varies slightly from year to year we create our wines from 75% estate grown grapes and 25% purchased from independent and highly respected Niagara grape growers. Our own estate vineyards are lovingly overseen by our renown viticultrualist, Roman Prydatkewycz, who has decades of experience pioneering vineyards and growing grapes in Niagara

  • St. Urban Vineyard: 42 acres
  • Bo-Teek Vineyard: 60 acres
  • Greenlane Beamsville: 16 acres
